In this day and age, copper refineries utilize a method called hydrometallurgy, in which liquid, rather than heat, is used to extract copper from its ore. This approach is considered highly efficient and even more eco-friendly, as it produces less byproducts. In fact, this method has been so widely adopted that nearly a fifth of the world's copper was produced utilizing this method.
A fifth is a pretty incredible amount of copper, especially when you consider that copper mines produce up to nine million tons of copper annually across the world. Most of these operations are in countries like Peru and Chile, but some are even located in the United States. The largest mine in the United States is named Bingham Canyon Mine, located in the state of Utah. This historic mine has been operating since 1903 and produces copper twenty four hours a day, seven days per week.
